I don’t feel like Reintgen pulled a fast one on me or anything. That being said, I don’t think this will come as a surprise to anyone who embarks on the book. The next book will presumably feature those who survived on Eden itself, attempting to mine Nyxia and no doubt discovering that the story fed to them by Babel about the Adamites is far more complicated. The entirety of the story takes place on the journey to Eden and then in orbit of the planet. The rest of the review is spoiler-free.įirst, this is absolutely a “set up” novel. Warning: there is a spoiler in the very last paragraph of this review regarding the death of a character. Then I’ll explain why, despite these issues, I still loved this book so much. I want to start by listing a few critiques of Nyxia, any one of which I can understand would make you like the book less.

While she’s in prison, Zita tries to find out what happened to her friends, plan a rescue, and save Earth from a nefarious attack scheme. She’s thrown into jail, where she befriends her cellmates, a pile of rags named Raggy and a skeleton named Femur. She’s even called “Zita the Crime Girl”, which is just rude. By the time we begin Return of Zita the Spacegirl, Zita and her friends have been split up, and she’s hauled into a prison on the Dungeon World on trumped-up charges of destroying an asteroid (to save a planet), interfering with a species immigration, theft of a spacecraft, and consorting with “known criminals and public nuisances”. Zita is a young girl who, with her friend Joseph, found herself on an outer space adventure after discovering a device in a crater while out playing one day. I quickly read Legends of Zita the Spacegirl, and was delighted when a review copy of Return of Zita the Spacegirl showed up on my doorstep a couple of weeks ago. I first met her when Chuck, our editor monkey, handed me a copy of the first book and said, “You have to read this. At once a guidebook to pessimistic thought and a relentless critique of humanity's employment of self-deception to cope with the pervasive suffering of their existence, The Conspiracy against the Human Race may just convince readers that there is more than a measure of truth in the despairing yet unexpectedly liberating negativity that is widely considered a hallmark of Ligotti's work. Drawing on philosophy, literature, neuroscience, and other fields of study, Ligotti takes the penetrating lens of his imagination and turns it on his audience, causing them to grapple with the brutal reality that they are living a meaningless nightmare, and anyone who feels otherwise is simply acting out an optimistic fallacy. His fiction is known to be some of the most terrifying in the genre of supernatural horror, but Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction book may be even scarier. It may be stated thus: Behind the scenes of life lurks something pernicious that makes a nightmare of our world." "There is a signature motif discernible in both works of philosophical pessimism and supernatural horror. In Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction outing, an examination of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of life through an insightful, unsparing argument that proves the greatest horrors are not the products of our imagination but instead are found in reality. Many of the translations were done by Strachey himself the rest were prepared under his supervision. The result is a pervasive and familiar guilt. But culture inhibits his instinctual drives. Man, by nature aggressive and egotistical, seeks self-satisfaction. In it he states his views on the broad question of man's place in the world, a place Freud defines in terms of ceaseless conflict between the individual's quest for freedom and society's demand for conformity.įreud's theme is that what works for civilization doesn't necessarily work for man. It is both witness and tribute to the late theory of mind-the so-called structural theory, with its stress on aggression, indeed the death drive, as the pitiless adversary of eros.Ĭivilization and Its Discontents is one of the last of Freud's books, written in the decade before his death and first published in German in 1929. It stands as a brilliant summary of the views on culture from a psychoanalytic perspective that he had been developing since the turn of the century.
